YG Entertainment Partners With Universal Records

YG Entertainment, home to some K-Pop's biggest acts, has partnered with Universal Records for the album release of two of its bestselling groups, 2NE1 and Big Bang! Blackjacks (fans of 2NE1) and VIPs (fans of Big Bang) are eagerly awaiting the Philippine editions of 2NE1's "The First Mini Album" (which includes massive hits like "Fire" and "I Don't Care") and "To Anyone", plus Big Bang's "Essential Big Bang" ( a compilation of their biggest hit singles)!

Pinoy K-pop fans are happy to hear about this partnership since Universal Records has already proven its savvy in marketing and promoting K-pop releases for the Philippine market. Universal Records is the #1 independent record company in the Philippines known for its successful OPM artists like Jose Mari Chan, Gary Valenciano, Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Christian Bautista, Jay R, Jed Madela, Parokya Ni Edgar, Kamikazee, Sponge Cola etc. It is also home to some of K-Pop's brightest and bestselling acts like TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls' Generation, SHINee, BoA, f(x), U-Kiss, One Way and many more! Not only that, Universal Records is the first record company in the Philippines to release K-Pop album way back in 2003 and the only record company to amass an impressive thirteen (13) #1 K-Pop Albums in a period of 12 months! Now that 2NE1 and Big Bang releases will be made available at a more affordable price, these two artists will definitely add to the list!

YG Entertainment is considered one of the top three talent agencies in Korea alongside SM Entertainment (TVXQ, BoA, Super Junior, SNSD, SHINee) and JYP Entertainment (Wonder Girls, 2PM). Their last year's sales was reported at 35.69 billion won (around 30,946,443.227 U.S. Dollars), up a whopping 93 percent from the previous year. The increase can be attributable to the success of many of its artists including idol group Big Bang and girl band 2NE1, both of whom raked in significant income from their album sales, music downloads, commercials as well as earnings from the members' individual activities.

YG, which stands for Yang Goon, was founded in 1996 by Yang Hyun-suk, a former member of popular Korean group Seo Tai-ji & Boys. Yang is credited with creating and managing the successful careers of many K-pop artists including 1TYM, Gummy, Jinusean, Se7en and Wheesung. The agency also manages several Korean actors including Kang Hye-jeong and Koo Hye-seon of the "Boys over Flowers" fame.

Universal Records is currently proud partners of both SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment!

OFW Pinoy Star | Christian Bautista: I’d like to settle down someday

OFW Pinoy Star: You performed in Singapore on a number of occasions, Christian? How do you feel coming here yet again?
Christian Bautista: Singapore is a wonderful city, always innovating always exciting, it feels good to come to such a vibrant city

What are your feelings when you perform in Singapore?
I always have to perform my best because so many world class acts perform here!

The audience was very enthusiastic when you performed at the DXO. Has it been like this all the time when you performed in Singapore?
Every time there are Filipinos in the audience, the energy levels go way up!

Will you be having a new repertoire for your SingTel concert? Please tell your fans what they can expect you to sing this time?
I will be singing a lot of songs from my new Christmas album.

Will you be doing a duet? Or perhaps, you will get more of your fans to join you on stage and share the spotlight with you?
If I get a chance to do so why not?

The girls in the audience are always crazy about you? Is it because of your singing talent? Or could it be due to your good looks?
Haha... that's a tough one to answer... both?

Talking about good looks, who is your current girlfriend?
None at the moment, but waiting for that right moment!

Do you believe that you will eventually find the one true love that you have been searching for all your life?
I'll wait for whom God has intended for me. Out there is certainly THE ONE.

Do you like being in a state of single-hood?
I plan to settle down someday with a wife and kids of my own...yes someday it will happen.

Malaysian actress, Carmen Soo said she actually fell in love when shooting the movie - Your Song presents Beautiful Girl” – with you. What really did she mean? She fell in love with you?
It was a TV series...Carmen is a sweet girl and easy to fall in love with and she is very pretty. She probably meant it in context to her role, but we are very good friends!

Christian Bautista talks about his international movie & Christmas CD @ SNN

Mla Bulletin online | Christian Bautista shares idea to sell more OPM

by Jojo P. Panaligan
 November 23, 2010, 2:35pm

MANILA, Philippines - Balladeer Christian Bautista believes that though CD sales in the Philippines have dipped to almost dangerous depths, selling Original Pilipino Music as ringback tones could save the day.

Bautista said so at the launch of his first Christmas CD, “A Wonderful Christmas,” last Nov. 19. He said that he knows about this first hand since one of his songs in Indonesia---“Tetaplah Dihatiku,” which is an adaptation of ‘80s OPM gem “Please Be Careful With My Heart,” done in duet with Bunga Citra Lestari---made loads of money from at least a million download as a ring back tone.

“Now, if only ‘The Way You Look At Me’ was already downloadable in Indonesia when it became a hit there, then maybe I wouldn’t even need to work right now!” the singer joked to Bulletin Entertainment about his signature song that made his name a byword in other Asian countries.

He explained that the non-traditional marketing strategy could work in the Philippines, since the country is also big on mobile phone usage. According to a study, a mobile phone subscriber in the Philippines sends on average, 27 texts per day. This means that downloading ringback tones could be as popular.

Bautista’s interest in music sales is understandable. He has been on a roll recently with his CD, “Romance Revisited: The Love Songs of Jose Mari Chan,” turning multi-Platinum.

His new album’s promotional single is “Nakaraang Pasko,” a remake of a Kuh Ledesma song in the ‘80s. However, it is “The Gift Of Christmas,” his duet with Lisa Chan, that the singer shared an anecdote of during the interview.

Apparently, Bautista met Lisa inside an airplane. She approached and introduced herself to him during the flight. The singer recalled feeling nervous then, knowing that she is the daughter of Jose Mari Chan and that she sang one of his favorite Christmas tunes, “Christmas In Our Hearts.”

“She told me, ‘I like how you remade my Dad’s songs. Maybe we can do a duet sometime.’ Would I have said, ‘No’?” the balladeer said.

In a previous interview, Bautista said that 2010 has been such a remarkable year for him that he could not ask for more; not even by way of a Christmas gift. He said that he only plans to buy for himself a Swiss Army knife this Yuletide.

“The sports car can wait,” he said, laughing.

Other tracks in “Wonderful Christmas” are “The Christmas Song,” “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “Silver Bells,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “Christmas Shoes,” “Christian Time,” “All I Want For Christmas,” “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” “Last Christmas,” “Christmas Alphabet,” and “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.”

Dunkin Donuts has collaborated with Universal Records in support of Bautista’s latest CD. By adding P25 to a dozen or Mas marami donuts purchase, “A Wonderful Christmas” can already be availed.

Bautista is unsure if he will spend Christmas Day and New Year’s Day in the country since he is still wrapping up work on his first Indonesian film titled, “Jayden’s Choir,” which is due for release early 2011.

What is sure is that he will be in the country for a few days at least since he has to tape for his show, “Star Power,” together with Sharon Cuneta and Erik Santos.

Yahoo! SEA | Gary Valenciano and other OPM stars attend songwriting camp in Dumaguete

Written by Sam Jacoba
for Yahoo! Southeast Asia

The 1st Elements National Songwriting Camp was overflowing with the talent of its campers—up-and-coming songwriters, established artists, and music industry stalwarts. The event, which was organized by 7101 Music Nation, allowed 60 participants to talk shop with some of the music industry’s most respected players, who served as their mentors.

The mentors did not just commune with the campers, but they jammed the night away night after night in the camp.

Then again, the star of the five-day event, which was held from November 14 to 18, was not any of the celebrated artists who flew in to share their expertise. The spotlight was on music itself.

Musical legacy:
The campers discussed the crucial role of songwriters in using music to shape people, culture, and the country as a whole.

“Music is the purest expression of our mind and soul, and it was never meant to be kept to ourselves,” said singer-songwriter Gary Valenciano. “Songwriters always say something and we want people to listen to what we say.”

The greatest challenge for today’s songwriters is to be heard. It’s still a problem—even with radio, TV, as well as the added creative platforms on the Net, the ubiquity of the iPod, and cell phones that can play music.

By request:
“Songwriters should not be worried about being heard or not. It took me several years to go mainstream,” said Noel Cabangon. “At 45, I have become a pop artist.” Cabangon’s “Mabuting Pilipino,” written in 1997, became one of the “anthems” of President Noynoy Aquino when he campaigned last May.

“More than ninety percent of the songs that I write won’t be heard. I do not write for commercial purposes,” shared Gary Granada, who delivered one of the most moving presentations in the camp.

Lyrical passion:
Granada also encouraged the campers to write music with a passion. “You cannot write something that you don’t know anything about. Be a subject matter expert in things that you write,” he said.

Granada’s statement was echoed by Jim Paredes who encouraged campers to rise above the rest by mastering their craft. He emphasized: “Good artistry is an elite experience. You should be a cut above the rest. Turning ordinary into extraordinary is what it’s all about.”

Jun Sy, CEO of 7101 Music Nation, can certainly attest that music can change lives. “If music can change a person, specifically, entrepreneurs like me, then I believe that music can change a nation,” he said. He then revealed that John Lennon’s “Imagine” was one of the songs that inspired him and has influenced how he manages TAO Corporation, the mother firm of 7101 Music Nation.

Inspired collaboration:
Sy envisioned the camp together with composer Ryan Cayabyab, and 7101 Music Nation COO Twinky Lagdameo. Their goal was to create platforms that would bring together Filipino songwriters, musicians, and artists from various genres or disciplines to celebrate the country’s musical diversity.

To stimulate collaborative work, campers were divided into 12 groups. Each group was tasked to come up with one song that would be presented in the camp. Three of the songs were reportedly signed up by MCA Music Inc. and Star Records.

MCA Music Inc. general manager Ricky Ilacad encouraged the campers to continue writing music. He also gave them tips on how to create hits. “The important thing is for you to keep on writing songs. Your song will be a hit with the right timing. Consumers have certain moods, and these moods follow a certain cycle, and it could be months or years for your songs to become a hit,” he said.

For his part, Joey Ayala told the campers to break new grounds and to take risks. “Expose yourself to the possibilities of doing something great by always pushing it. The major, major things that happen in your lives are all black swans,” he said, referring to ultra rare occurrences of runaway breakthroughs.

Crucial issues:
The event also highlighted the concerns of the music industry.

Angeli Valenciano, president of Manila Genesis Entertainment & Management, Inc., stated that “the respect for music” should be brought back first. “Why do we allow those who cannot carry a tune to sing on TV?” she asked. She said that the whole education system should also be improved end-to-end specifically for music to progress and prosper. She also discussed the possibility of establishing a radio station dedicated to Filipino music.

Rico Blanco, on the other hand, said, “The major TV and radio networks should become proactive partners of the OPM industry.” He added that media people should help build a positive image of local musicians. He then reiterated the need to eliminate piracy.

Debbie Gaite, general manager of the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Inc. (Filscap), explained the importance of managing their copyright. She related, “Freddie Aguilar wrote ‘Anak,’ but he did not know that he already have given its copyright to a record label, so even he was restricted from using it.”

Gaite revealed that the publishing rights fees Filscap collected for its members has been growing consistently since 2005. Gaite expects Filscap revenues to hit P83M in 2011.

Future festival:
“We are very satisfied with the results of the camp,” said Cayabyab. “We selected mentors whom we believe will be selfless and share their experiences. What we did not anticipate is how the mentors have affected each other through their sharing.”

Sy sees the camp evolving into a music festival that will begin an unprecedented music movement, not just in Dumaguete, but the whole country.

Camper Bullet Dumas, who was encouraged by his girlfriend to join the qualifying stage for the camp, shared how the camp has strengthened his dream to write music. Similarly, Dani Zamar, who hails from Dumaguete and was encouraged by her parents to try out for the camp, has resolved to further hone her music skills. Already a registered nurse, Zamar is now a music freshman at Silliman University.

“The camp did not just impact the campers but the mentors as well,” revealed Ebe Dancel, lead singer of Sugarfree. This sentiment was also shared by the other mentors such as Top Suzara, Chito Miranda, Gabby Alipe, Yael Yuzon, Jay Durias, and Rico Blanco, among others. “The goal is always to write good songs,” Dancel added. “My passion for song writing was reignited by this event.”

"You Don't Know" is written by Ogie Alcasid and the music video is now airing on MYX, the #1 music channel in the country.

Here's the lyrics of "You Don't Know"

YOU DON'T KNOW

You said goodbye, tearing my world apart.
I felt so numb, not knowing, not believing
That our love was a farce,
That we two could never be one.
I gave everything I could.

Refrain
You don't know how it feels to be loved
To be touched by an angel, be swept away.
You'll never know just what it means
When you make me believe that love is real
And this could be forever,
You'll never know how it feels to love.

I never knew that we could end this way
But I thank you for sending me on my way …
My way (2x)

Repeat Refrain

You'll never know (3x)
How it feels to love.

SHINee to perform for 30,000 Fans in Korea & 24,000 in Japan!

SHINee's first solo concerts in Korea and Japan have exceeded expectations with the enormous fan response.

In Japan, they added an additional date to their concert at the Yoyogi National Stadium and will now be performing for 24,000 fans after selling out 12,000 seats during their pre-sale.

In Korea, SM Entertainment completely changed the dates of their first concert from December 18 and 19th to January 1st and 2nd in order to move to the much larger Seoul Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium venue.

The venue can hold 15,000 people and over 2 days, SM expects that SHINee will perform to nearly 30,000 fans.

In comparison, their original venue (KBS 88 Stadium) only held 4,000 fans.
