Mla Bulletin online | Christian Bautista shares idea to sell more OPM

MANILA, Philippines - Balladeer Christian Bautista believes that though CD sales in the Philippines have dipped to almost dangerous depths, selling Original Pilipino Music as ringback tones could save the day.

Bautista said so at the launch of his first Christmas CD, “A Wonderful Christmas,” last Nov. 19. He said that he knows about this first hand since one of his songs in Indonesia---“Tetaplah Dihatiku,” which is an adaptation of ‘80s OPM gem “Please Be Careful With My Heart,” done in duet with Bunga Citra Lestari---made loads of money from at least a million download as a ring back tone.

“Now, if only ‘The Way You Look At Me’ was already downloadable in Indonesia when it became a hit there, then maybe I wouldn’t even need to work right now!” the singer joked to Bulletin Entertainment about his signature song that made his name a byword in other Asian countries.

He explained that the non-traditional marketing strategy could work in the Philippines, since the country is also big on mobile phone usage. According to a study, a mobile phone subscriber in the Philippines sends on average, 27 texts per day. This means that downloading ringback tones could be as popular.

Bautista’s interest in music sales is understandable. He has been on a roll recently with his CD, “Romance Revisited: The Love Songs of Jose Mari Chan,” turning multi-Platinum.

His new album’s promotional single is “Nakaraang Pasko,” a remake of a Kuh Ledesma song in the ‘80s. However, it is “The Gift Of Christmas,” his duet with Lisa Chan, that the singer shared an anecdote of during the interview.

Apparently, Bautista met Lisa inside an airplane. She approached and introduced herself to him during the flight. The singer recalled feeling nervous then, knowing that she is the daughter of Jose Mari Chan and that she sang one of his favorite Christmas tunes, “Christmas In Our Hearts.”

“She told me, ‘I like how you remade my Dad’s songs. Maybe we can do a duet sometime.’ Would I have said, ‘No’?” the balladeer said.

In a previous interview, Bautista said that 2010 has been such a remarkable year for him that he could not ask for more; not even by way of a Christmas gift. He said that he only plans to buy for himself a Swiss Army knife this Yuletide.

“The sports car can wait,” he said, laughing.

Other tracks in “Wonderful Christmas” are “The Christmas Song,” “Angels We Have Heard On High,” “Silver Bells,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “Christmas Shoes,” “Christian Time,” “All I Want For Christmas,” “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” “Last Christmas,” “Christmas Alphabet,” and “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.”

Dunkin Donuts has collaborated with Universal Records in support of Bautista’s latest CD. By adding P25 to a dozen or Mas marami donuts purchase, “A Wonderful Christmas” can already be availed.

Bautista is unsure if he will spend Christmas Day and New Year’s Day in the country since he is still wrapping up work on his first Indonesian film titled, “Jayden’s Choir,” which is due for release early 2011.

What is sure is that he will be in the country for a few days at least since he has to tape for his show, “Star Power,” together with Sharon Cuneta and Erik Santos.
