Noel Cabangon’s new album "Panaginip" out on June 24

Universal Records is proud to present Noel Cabangon’s latest album "Panaginip" featuring the launching single of the same title. The album is the follow-up to Cabangon’s previous album and first under Universal Records “Byahe”, which stayed as the Number one album in major record stores for 17 weeks en route to being certified Platinum. Panaginip boasts of 15 tracks consisting of 4 covers and 11 original compositions of Cabangon. The album was recorded at Sound Creation with major musical arrangers Bob Aves, Fred Garcia, Ria Villena-Osorio, Simon Tan and Ito Rapadas.

The album was inspired by Sting’s performance with the Royal Philharmonic in Berlin. “People tend to know me more as an acoustic performer,” says Cabangon. “This time, this album is mostly done with a full band with orchestral arrangements.”

Why "Panaginip" as the album title? “Dahil lahat ng kanta ay nagmumula sa imahinasyon. Ang mga awit ay tula, ang mga tula ay awit. Ang mga awit ay likha ng malayang panaginip. Ang panaginip ay likha ng malayang isip,” says Cabangon. “Ang pag-iimagine ay malaya, wala naming nagbabawal sa iyo.” While it may appear that "Byahe" turned to be the biggest selling album of Cabagon’s career mainly because of the great cover songs, Cabangon bravely takes the road less traveled with an album comprised mainly of original songs.

“It’s a bit risky, kasi sa panahon ngayon ‘in’ pa rin ang covers”, says Cabangon. “Byahe" was an overwhelming success because the advantage was it had very familiar songs. But Universal Records is behind me. It is called "Panaginip" because it’s a challenge for a songwriter is for his creation to be heard. Kailangan tayo gumawa ng bagong originals. We have to move forward and write more songs. For the songs in this album hinahanap ko yung elegance ng mga hit songs. As songwriters, we need to challenge ourselves into creating a brilliant concept and to become brilliant songwriters na di natin makita sa mga new songs, walang sophistication and elegance. We should try to write lyrics that are poetic without becoming too deep. We need to challenge our listeners. Kailangan makadagdag na rin tayo to the rich anthology ng Philippine music.”

Noteworthy original songs include collaborations with former Sugarfree frontman Ebe Dancel (“Hulog Ka ng Langit”) and Diamond soul siren Nina (“Ikaw Na Sana”). Other impressive new songs include the aforementioned title track “Panaginip”, as well as “Dahan Dahan”, “Bayani ng Bayan”, “Ngayon ang Bagong Simula”, the hip-hop flavored “Walang Katulad” and the haunting “Awit ng Naghahanap”, a heart-wrenching tune inspired by victims of political killings. With his new album, Noel Cabangon is once again ready to sing about us and his dreams for all of us.

“This album encapsulates my dreams for my country, my fellowmen and my friends,” says Cabangon. “It’s one big challenge to do well primarily on original songs but this is one of the challenges that is worth working hard for, para mabigyan buhay ang bayan.”

Yahoo! SEA | Gary Valenciano and other OPM stars attend songwriting camp in Dumaguete

Written by Sam Jacoba
for Yahoo! Southeast Asia

The 1st Elements National Songwriting Camp was overflowing with the talent of its campers—up-and-coming songwriters, established artists, and music industry stalwarts. The event, which was organized by 7101 Music Nation, allowed 60 participants to talk shop with some of the music industry’s most respected players, who served as their mentors.

The mentors did not just commune with the campers, but they jammed the night away night after night in the camp.

Then again, the star of the five-day event, which was held from November 14 to 18, was not any of the celebrated artists who flew in to share their expertise. The spotlight was on music itself.

Musical legacy:
The campers discussed the crucial role of songwriters in using music to shape people, culture, and the country as a whole.

“Music is the purest expression of our mind and soul, and it was never meant to be kept to ourselves,” said singer-songwriter Gary Valenciano. “Songwriters always say something and we want people to listen to what we say.”

The greatest challenge for today’s songwriters is to be heard. It’s still a problem—even with radio, TV, as well as the added creative platforms on the Net, the ubiquity of the iPod, and cell phones that can play music.

By request:
“Songwriters should not be worried about being heard or not. It took me several years to go mainstream,” said Noel Cabangon. “At 45, I have become a pop artist.” Cabangon’s “Mabuting Pilipino,” written in 1997, became one of the “anthems” of President Noynoy Aquino when he campaigned last May.

“More than ninety percent of the songs that I write won’t be heard. I do not write for commercial purposes,” shared Gary Granada, who delivered one of the most moving presentations in the camp.

Lyrical passion:
Granada also encouraged the campers to write music with a passion. “You cannot write something that you don’t know anything about. Be a subject matter expert in things that you write,” he said.

Granada’s statement was echoed by Jim Paredes who encouraged campers to rise above the rest by mastering their craft. He emphasized: “Good artistry is an elite experience. You should be a cut above the rest. Turning ordinary into extraordinary is what it’s all about.”

Jun Sy, CEO of 7101 Music Nation, can certainly attest that music can change lives. “If music can change a person, specifically, entrepreneurs like me, then I believe that music can change a nation,” he said. He then revealed that John Lennon’s “Imagine” was one of the songs that inspired him and has influenced how he manages TAO Corporation, the mother firm of 7101 Music Nation.

Inspired collaboration:
Sy envisioned the camp together with composer Ryan Cayabyab, and 7101 Music Nation COO Twinky Lagdameo. Their goal was to create platforms that would bring together Filipino songwriters, musicians, and artists from various genres or disciplines to celebrate the country’s musical diversity.

To stimulate collaborative work, campers were divided into 12 groups. Each group was tasked to come up with one song that would be presented in the camp. Three of the songs were reportedly signed up by MCA Music Inc. and Star Records.

MCA Music Inc. general manager Ricky Ilacad encouraged the campers to continue writing music. He also gave them tips on how to create hits. “The important thing is for you to keep on writing songs. Your song will be a hit with the right timing. Consumers have certain moods, and these moods follow a certain cycle, and it could be months or years for your songs to become a hit,” he said.

For his part, Joey Ayala told the campers to break new grounds and to take risks. “Expose yourself to the possibilities of doing something great by always pushing it. The major, major things that happen in your lives are all black swans,” he said, referring to ultra rare occurrences of runaway breakthroughs.

Crucial issues:
The event also highlighted the concerns of the music industry.

Angeli Valenciano, president of Manila Genesis Entertainment & Management, Inc., stated that “the respect for music” should be brought back first. “Why do we allow those who cannot carry a tune to sing on TV?” she asked. She said that the whole education system should also be improved end-to-end specifically for music to progress and prosper. She also discussed the possibility of establishing a radio station dedicated to Filipino music.

Rico Blanco, on the other hand, said, “The major TV and radio networks should become proactive partners of the OPM industry.” He added that media people should help build a positive image of local musicians. He then reiterated the need to eliminate piracy.

Debbie Gaite, general manager of the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Inc. (Filscap), explained the importance of managing their copyright. She related, “Freddie Aguilar wrote ‘Anak,’ but he did not know that he already have given its copyright to a record label, so even he was restricted from using it.”

Gaite revealed that the publishing rights fees Filscap collected for its members has been growing consistently since 2005. Gaite expects Filscap revenues to hit P83M in 2011.

Future festival:
“We are very satisfied with the results of the camp,” said Cayabyab. “We selected mentors whom we believe will be selfless and share their experiences. What we did not anticipate is how the mentors have affected each other through their sharing.”

Sy sees the camp evolving into a music festival that will begin an unprecedented music movement, not just in Dumaguete, but the whole country.

Camper Bullet Dumas, who was encouraged by his girlfriend to join the qualifying stage for the camp, shared how the camp has strengthened his dream to write music. Similarly, Dani Zamar, who hails from Dumaguete and was encouraged by her parents to try out for the camp, has resolved to further hone her music skills. Already a registered nurse, Zamar is now a music freshman at Silliman University.

“The camp did not just impact the campers but the mentors as well,” revealed Ebe Dancel, lead singer of Sugarfree. This sentiment was also shared by the other mentors such as Top Suzara, Chito Miranda, Gabby Alipe, Yael Yuzon, Jay Durias, and Rico Blanco, among others. “The goal is always to write good songs,” Dancel added. “My passion for song writing was reignited by this event.”

Ito’y ang Binibini -- bilang Best World Music Awards, Ang Buhay Nga Naman -- bilang Best Song Written for Movie/Stage Play Recording, Best Male Performer -- sa awiting Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko, at ang Album Of The Year.

Phil. Daily Inquirer | The Ballad of Noel Cabangon

Written by Eric S. Caruncho
Philippine Daily Inquirer

First Posted 17:02:00 08/07/2010
Source:
http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/sim/sim/view/20100807-285457/The-Ballad-of-Noel-Cabangon

The moment – if ever there was one – during the inauguration of President Benigno Aquino III was when singer Noel Cabangon led the highest officials of the land in an impromptu sing-along to “Ako’y Isang Mabuting Pilipino [I am a Good Filipino].”

“I was already in the middle of the song when it dawned on me,” recalls Cabangon. “S__t! The past president is here, the Senate president, the Chief Justice, the archbishop, mayors and VIPs. Pagkakataon na ito! [This is a great opportunity] Game!”

Inspired by “Panatang Makabayan,” the song is a modern-day pledge of allegiance, a vow of good citizenship. For a moment, Cabangon even thought of asking the newly sworn-in president to join in, as he had done during the campaign, but at the last moment decided it might detract from the solemnity of the occasion.

“Mabuting Pilipino’ always had audience participation,” says Cabangon. “P-Noy and [his party’s] senatorial bets would swear in front of the people that they would be good Filipinos, and they would have to live up to it. This was my chance to have them swear, in front of all the people gathered there. I didn’t even think of the people here and abroad watching on television.”

Cabangon had only been scheduled to perform one song, “Bagong Pilipinas,” with Ogie Alcasid. But then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had arrived early for the turnover, and the program suddenly had 40 minutes to fill before the inaugural speech.

Cabangon was already packing his guitar when he was called back to the stage. When Kris Aquino called out for “Kanlungan,” his breakthrough radio hit, after “Mabuting Pilipino,” he thought: now you don’t have a choice but to listen to me. Later, Butch Abad would tell him: “Pare, marunong talaga ang Diyos [God is really wise].”

“I was at the right place at the right time,” says Cabangon.

It took him more than 25 years to get there.

But the greatest irony in that triumphal moment – an irony not lost on the singer himself – was the fact that Noel Cabangon first began to make a name for himself as a protest singer, performing at rallies against the administration of Corazon Aquino, the mother of the president he had just helped put in office.

The Quirino Grandstand gig was like coming full circle.

A proud G.I (genuine Ilocano), Noel Cabangon comes from a family of modest means from Rosario, La Union. He learned to sing and pick a guitar at an early age. He mastered the standard folkie repertoire: Don McLean, Jim Croce, Simon and Garfunkel, Peter, Paul and Mary, and his favorite, James Taylor.

After graduating from the Quezon City High School, Noel persuaded his parents to let him enroll at the St. Louis University in Baguio City. There, while pursuing engineering studies, he tried to get a singing gig at one of the popular folk houses, the Fireplace or the Cozy Nook, but there were no takers. Instead, he landed an unpaid gig at the Solibao, a café in Burnham Park.

“The line that managers would always give you after you auditioned was, ‘We’ll call you’,” he recalls. “They never did.” It was a line he would hear often.

When family funds ran out, he was forced to return to Manila. Getting a slot at a folk house proved even more difficult. It was 1980, and no one wanted to hear folk music anymore. Freddie Aguilar was still around, but even the great Asin had gone to Mindanao in search of greener pastures.

As William Blake wrote, “If the fool would persist in his folly, he would become wise.” Cabangon’s persistence eventually landed him a spot as an alternate singer in a Kamuning bar called Far West, for the princely sum of P30 a night.

The ensuing years found him living the knockabout life of an itinerant folk singer, the modern-day equivalent of a wandering troubadour. He subsisted on a succession of low-paying crap gigs at places now long-gone such as Crown’s Delight, Grandma’s Kitchenette, Taxco, the International Pub. Sometimes he would alternate with an a-go-go dancer. Other times he was shooed off the stage so the patrons could sing along with the newly-popular Minus One.

“Folk singers are the working class of the music industry,” he says. “You don’t play, you don’t earn.”

Eventually, though, he made his way to legendary venues such as the Hobbit House, My Father’s Moustache, and Gasera, a tiny place in UP Village where he heard the music of the pioneers of protest folk such as Pol Galang and Heber Bartolome.

Cabangon found his music taking a turn for the political in the aftermath of Sen. Benigno Aquino’s assassination in 1983. If there was one place where folk music had never died, it was in the bosom of “the Movement.” It had evolved into an original form of agit-prop protest music nurtured by artists such as Jess Santiago and the aforementioned Bartolome and Galang.

An older brother was an activist, and he himself had become one briefly during a short-lived stint as a business major at the Philippine School for Business Administration, where he wrote for the school paper.

“When we sang ‘Bayan Ko’ at My Father’s Moustache, the patrons would tear up the napkins and throw the pieces in the air like confetti,” he recalls. “Taas kamao [clenched fist in the air].”

As the anti-Marcos protests escalated, Cabangon found himself drawn more and more into the protest movement. But ironically, he was absent at the culmination.

He had joined a band called Shades of Time, and had landed a coveted gig at a resort hotel in Sabah, Malaysia. Momentous events were taking place back home, and the band members were ready to go home when the Edsa People Power revolt broke out. Flights to Manila were cancelled, and Cabangon had to stay in Sabah another month while people were dancing in the streets back home. They had missed the whole thing.

It was just as well, because when he finally got back, not everything had changed for the better. In the new democratic space, the Left had begun to assert itself, through rallies, marches and political campaigns, prompting a reaction from the Right. Cabangon soon found himself in the thick of it when he teamed up with Rom Dongeto and Rene Boncocan to form Buklod. Originally an NGO called Bukluran ng Musikero para sa Bayan, Buklod eventually pared down into a performing trio, later a duo.

For the most part, Buklod found its audience in the streets, during the rallies and marches for human rights, land reform, the end of the US military bases, and genuine democratic reforms.

On January 22, 1987, they were preparing to go onstage at a farmer’s rally for land reform when shots rang out and chaos ensued. The aftermath of the so-called “Mendiola Massacre” found 13 people dead, scores more wounded, and the promise of Edsa in tatters.

In the ensuing years, Buklod recorded three albums – “Bukid at Buhay,” “Tatsulok” and “Sa Kanlungan ng Kalikasan.” Their song “Tumindig Ka,” a sort of tribute to Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up,” became the unofficial marching song of the Cory-era protest movement. They also contributed songs to the “Dear Cory” and “Karapatang Pantao” compilations which remain landmarks in the politicization of Filipino alternative music.

By the time Buklod called it quits, Cabangon had landed a regular gig at the ’70s Bistro, which gave him the confidence to quit his various day jobs and become a full-time musician. His stint, which began in 1992, would last 12 years, a record of sorts in the live music scene. During this time, he honed his craft.

Cabangon’s Bistro years coincided with the rise and fall of “alternative” music. Just as Edsa had created a democratic space in the political arena, where contradictions between Left and Right could work themselves out, the massive success of the Eraserheads created space in the musical arena where the contradictions between Underground and Pop could battle it out.

“I wanted to explore all possibilities in music,” he says. Cabangon explored avenues as diverse as composing pop songs for Agot Isidro, performing musical theater in “Lean” (a musical on the life of slain activist Lean Alejandro, in which he played the lead) and a production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” (where he was also the lead).

Later, he formed an electric folk rock band called Wen’a (Ilocano for “of course!”), with which he recorded an album, “Pasakalye” in 2001. At the same time, he began a fruitful collaboration with the Jesuit Music Ministry that saw the release of three albums: “Huwag Mangamba,” “Medyas” and “Noel” which featured devotional songs, experimental jazz fusion and Christmas songs, respectively.

Meanwhile, “Kanlungan,” a gently nostalgic ballad that Cabangon had recorded with Buklod and released in their final album, had become something of a sleeper hit. The song had found its way into the airwaves as early as 1993, when DJs began playing it on LA and NU FM stations. The song’s popularity eventually led to a posthumous “best of” album for Buklod and CD releases after years of only being heard on worn-out cassettes. Even more incredibly, it was picked up by McDonalds for a television commercial in 2003. The lyrics had actually been written by Rom Dongeto, his erstwhile partner in Buklod, but “Kanlungan” became his signature song.

It was one step closer to the mainstream.

It would take a few more years, though. Cabangon had shopped “Pasakalye” around the major record labels, thinking it was his most “commercial” effort, but all he got was another variation of “we’ll call you.”

Perhaps they didn’t hear another “Kanlungan.” (Eventually the Jesuit Communications Foundation picked it up, not exactly a ringing endorsement of “Pasakalye’s” commercial potential.)

Cabangon finally landed a major label recording contract last year, when he was signed to a two-album deal by Universal Records Philippines. “Byahe,” the initial release, was conceived in the wake of successful compilation albums of covers of old OPM hits by new bands. It would feature songs by Asin, Florante, Apo, Rey Valera, Sampaguita and Buklod, including a new version of “Kanlungan” sung as a duet with Imago’s Aia de Leon.

The album was an instant hit. It promptly landed in the Top 10 OPM albums, and quickly went platinum – a rarity in these days of digital downloading.

Meanwhile, friends in the Liberal Party and Akbayan had asked him to help in the Aquino presidential campaign. Cabangon wrote “Ngayon (Tungo sa Pagbabago)” which became the campaign’s official anthem. He also went out with the candidates during campaign sorties, where the highlight of the evening would often be a sing-along to “Ako’y Isang Mabuting Pilipino,” with both candidates and crowd joining in.

Sales for “Byahe” picked up even more after the inauguration, when a new wave of listeners was introduced to Noel Cabangon and his music. Universal Records lost no time re-releasing “Byahe” with a bonus CD including two of the songs sung during the inauguration, “Ako’y Isang Mabuting Pilipino” and “Ngayon (Tungo sa Pagbabago),” the song Cabangon composed for the Aquino campaign.

It begs the question: why had the mainstream taken so long to catch on to Noel Cabangon?

“Life really begins at 45,” he says. On reflection, his byahe, his journey, has really been toward the mainstream.

“My analogy is, alternative music is like a tributary that will lead you to the mainstream, which will in turn lead to the ocean,” he says. “You don’t want to get stuck in a tributary. The only way to get your music across to the people is to go to the mainstream.”

24 Oras | The People Behind President Noynoy's Inaugural Theme "Bagong Pilipinas"

Inquirer | Aquino inaugural song written in one day

By Pocholo Concepcion

President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino’s inaugural tomorrow at the Quirino Grandstand will not only feature international pop star Charice Pempengco singing the National Anthem, but also present “Bagong Pilipinas,” a song specially written for the ceremony by Ogie Alcasid and Noel Cabangon.

“Bagong Pilipinas” is a collaborative work—likewise for the first time—between the two singer-songwriters, who had actively campaigned for Aquino.

Alcasid had earlier written another song, “Hindi Ka Nag-iisa,” which became the theme music in a video featuring dozens of celebrities who donated their time and presence to endorse Aquino.

All-star cast

Cabangon had also offered to perform, for free, one of his own compositions, “Ako ay Isang Mabuting Pilipino,” at Aquino’s campaign sorties.

At the Quirino Grandstand, Alcasid and Cabangon will perform “Bagong Pilipinas” with an all-star cast of fellow artists, which include Gary Valenciano, Regine Velasquez, Jed Madela, Christian Bautista, Nina, Jim Paredes, Mae Paner (a.k.a. Juana Change), the UP Madrigal Singers and La Salle Green Hills’ Kundirana.

Cabangon told the Inquirer via e-mail that it was Alcasid who broached the idea to work together on the song.

“A few days after the May 10 elections, I texted Ogie a congratulatory message because our presidential bet was on his way to victory,” Cabangon recalled. “Ogie replied, and then asked if I could help him write a song to celebrate Noy’s victory.”

Cabangon recounted that he said yes right away; he and Alcasid also agreed that the song should be a call for unity among Filipinos.

At 6 p.m. on the same day they talked, the songwriters met in Alcasid’s house and went to work.

“Ogie already had a melody and lyrics for the first stanza. Then we tossed around some ideas for the second stanza. Ogie had also written the chorus part but we needed more lines and an additional melody. A couple of hours later, we finished the song and recorded the demo.”

Ryan Cayabyab came in to help in the arrangement.

It was only then that Alcasid reportedly said he would talk to Aquino if they could perform the song at the latter’s inaugural.

What was it like collaborating with a pop artist like Alcasid?

“We have different styles on how we write, like in the use of language,” said Cabangon. “But I had a good experience.”

Cabangon believes they have a good song in their hands, even if they had considered going over it again for possible revisions and polishing. “But that was it,” he said. “I was in Geneva when Ogie broke the news to the media that we are performing the song at the inaugural.”

Yahoo news | 'Bagong Pilipinas' is Aquino inaugural song

ABS-CBN - Saturday, June 26

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED/CORRECTED) – Jed Madela is one of the 10 singers chosen to sing “Bagong Pilipinas” (New Philippines) on June 30 when President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is sworn in as the country’s 15 president.

Ogie Alcasid and Noel Cabangon were commissioned by the inaugural committee to compose the song for Aquino’s inauguration in Manila.

Madela said he was so moved by the song that he still got goosebumps even after recording the music.

“Ganda, sobrang ganda. Actually, hanggang ngayon, nag-goosebumps pa din ako, listening to all singers singing as one,” Madela said.

Aside from Madela, some of the artists who will perform the song are Alcasid, Jim Paredes, Mae Paner (popularly known as Juana Change), Nina, Christian Bautista, Cabangon, Gary Valenciano and Regine Velasquez.

“For the first time, the song will be sang by all singers. And then we’re going to be backed up by the Symphony Orchestra, 70s Band, the Madrigal Singers...and Kunderana will be there,” Alcasid said.

He added: “Lahat nga kami iba’t iba ang channel, ng network. In fact, Gary openly was supporting another president, but he came here. It’s not about that anymore. It’s about coming together and working as one.”

Valenciano, for his part, said it is only fitting that the song will be heard for the first time during Aquino’s inauguration.

‘’Yong timing ng kanta, eksakto sa historical event, for inauguration. For example, kunwari, may isang awitin na I love you. Kapag narinig natin sa radyo, okay lang. Pero pag nandiyan ka na sa sitwasyon na ‘yon, ‘yong salitang I love you, iba na ang dating,” Valenciano said.

“Bagong Pilipinas” will be included in a special music album that will be produced by Kris Aquino, the president-elect's youngest sister. -Report from Marie Lozano, ABS-CBN News
