Malaya | Parokya ni Edgar is back… to basics

Their last album was three years ago, but far from being forgotten, Parokya ni Edgar only made their fans more eager about their next outing.

Older – and presumably wiser – lead vocalist Chito Miranda, drummer Dindin Moreno, vocalist Vinci Montaner, bassist Buwi Meneses and guitarists Darius Semana and Gab Cheekee – return to the scene with a new album, "Middle-Aged Juvenile Novelty Pop Rockers," and an old sound.

But old does not mean tired. Chito says it’s getting back to the basics, returning to the sound he – and the rest of the members – will always have a strong affinity to.

"Namiss ko ‘yung bands ng ‘90s na old school. Kahit nga ‘yung cover namin, inspired by ‘Ninja Tutles’ na sikat nung ‘90s.

"Gusto naming ibalibag ‘yung listeners sa ‘90s, ‘yung mga kuwentong kung ano ang napakinggan sa ‘90s, which we are really a part of.

"Eto ‘yung time na sobrang raw ang tugtugan," he reminisces.

The album features 15 tracks, including the lead single "Paki-Usap Lang (Lasingin Nyo Ako)" which is made in the tradition of one of the band’s biggest hits, "Inuman Na."

"Paki-Usap," true to its back-to-basics theme, has a personal video taken during be a trip to the beach of Chito and his friends like Ehra Madrigal, Bubbles Paraiso and Angel Locsin and Ehra’s boyfriend, Myke Salomon. The shaky, sometimes blurred shots show the group having fun carousing in a pool and drinking beer.

The rest of the tracks features the same irreverent humor of the band: "Original Song," "Ganito O!," "Reunion (Panahon ng Kasiyahan)," "Orange," "Pangarap Lang Kita Feat. Happee Sy," "OK Katol," "Francis Vincent Montaner," "Red Pants," "Yakult," "Walong Baso," "One Hit Combo feat. Gloc9," "Tuloy Po Kayo," "Lolo Bye," "Ok Lang Ako," and "Pangarap Lang Kita feat. Francis Vincent Montaner."

The album marks the third year since the release of their previous album "Solid," which was followed by a heavy three years of touring not only in the country but overseas as well. It was the chief reason it took the band this long to release a new album.

"Priority naming gigs kasi ala kaming day jobs so kailangan tugtog ng tugtog," Chito says.

Compared with the devil-may-care attitude that guided the making of "Solid," their new album is a return to the jokes and a return to love.

The album is out from Universal Records.
