Christian Bautista too busy for love

Balladeer Christian Bautista doesn’t mind being loveless because it affords him more time to focus on work.

Single for quite a while now, Christian shows he is eager to “conquer new roads and discover new horizons” musically with the release of his first album for Universal Records titled, “Romance Revisited: The Love Songs of Jose Mari Chan.”

“I feel fresh…like I’m starting over again,” he said in an interview. “I don’t think I’m ready for new love at the moment, especially with the way my career is going. I really need to focus.”

Christian feigned innocence when asked about his supposed “relationship” with Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo.

“Are we? I did? Who says?” he asked mockingly, adding, “Sarah is a good friend. I’m not saying that she is not what one would call girlfriend material – because she is.

“But nothing romantic (is) going on (between us). We’re just friends but…hmmm… yeah, who knows…maybe someday?”

Sarah duets with Christian in one of the songs in his latest album that, as made obvious in the title, contains his interpretation of OPM icon Jose Mari Chan's well-loved romantic odes including “Beautiful Girl,” “Constant Change,” and “Refrain.”

The 19-song CD also features collaborations with Regine Velasquez, Lani Misalucha, and Jose Mari Chan himself.

“Not to take away from Regine’s, Lani’s and, of course, Sarah’s efforts but working with Mr. Jose Mari Chan was a landmark for me. These are his songs and doing a reinterpretation with his blessing is such an honor. He was so accommodating, so generous, and so kind,” said Christian.

The singer admitted there is “great pressure” involved in selling his album due to Jose Mari’s record-breaking status as a “double diamond” artist.

"He has sold millions (of albums) all over Asia and nobody has surpassed that. It’s scary and I know there’d be comparisons---I could only hope to sell as much,” he said.

Christian believes Universal Records’ offer for him to remake Jose Mari’s songs is serendipitous because he had long wanted to do so even when he was with another label.

“It was one of the things mentioned during our negotiations that got me interested. I mean, how could I resist? I looked at it as a chance of a lifetime, a chance that I couldn’t simply pass off.”

Bautista emphasized that he is in good terms with his former label. “We parted ways amicably. There’s no trouble whatsoever. I am eternally grateful to them,” he said.

Romance Revisited: The Love Songs of Jose Mari Chan” will also be released internationally, specifically in Malaysia and in Indonesia where Bautista has a huge following.

The international version will contain duets with singers from those countries one of whom is Noryn Aziz in a Bahasa version of “Ngiti.”
