Phil. Star | Christian tapped to sing at New York's RP Freedom Day fest

Funfare by Ricky Lo

For New York Pinoys, Christian Bautista is “the one.”

“Confirmed,” said Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre (of The Filipino Reporter). “Christian was unanimously chosen by the Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) to be the main performer at the Philippine Independence Day celebration in New York City on June 6.”

According to Edmund, the annual event is the biggest Philippine Independence Day celebration outside the Philippines, drawing tens of thousands of Filipinos across the US East Coast and from as far as California and Canada.

“Christian was chosen from among a list of noted Filipino artists presented by ABS-CBN/The Filipino Channel,” Edmund quoted Vivian Velasco, a PIDCI official, as saying. “He is not only an Asian pop idol, he’s also a great role model of his generation. No wonder he’s admired even in foreign shores.”

Christian’s manager, Carlo Orosa, will also perform in the same event, said PIDCI president Dr. Bernie dela Merced.

“They will also join the parade to be headed by this year’s grand marshals, Benjamin H. Santos, R.N., and Dr. Zenaida E. Santos, a high-profile couple involved in various humanitarian missions and programs. They also own the successful United Staffing Registry (United Home Care) in Queens, N.Y.”

Christian is the latest addition to the growing list of Filipino showbiz personalities who have graced the RP Freedom Day extravaganza in the Big Apple. Last year’s crowd-drawers were Dingdong Dantes, Aljur Abrenica, R&B singer Jay-R, Mylene Dizon and Charice.

Christian’s record album sales have reached the triple-platinum mark not only in the Philippines but also in Indonesia where he is a superstar heartthrob. All his five albums have also charted in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

After Christian’s huge success in Indonesia, his latest single Anagurah Cinta with Noryn Aziz, was launched in Malaysia. The next Bahasa single is now being prepared for release in his album this April to be distributed by Universal Music Malaysia.

Funfare learned that Christian has offers to do a movie and a soap opera in Indonesia. Christian will finalize his decision soon.
