Uriah Heep has often been referred as “one of the greatest bands from the ‘70s”. A definition that with no doubt tells one side of the story of this magnificent band that together with the more rewarded Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin have been defined the undisputed inventors of Hard Rock. But in contrast to these other great bands Uriah Heep have always been mainly focussed on the flowery and melodic aspect of the genre. Many of Uriah Heep’s songs sparkle due to sophisticated songwriting, fascinating harmony backing vocals and unexcelled catchy melodies.
Originally founded by sadly missed vocalist David Byron and guitarist Mick Box, the band ran through an amazing number of reformations, with Mick Box always at the helm, supported by the great talent of Ex Bowie/Ziggy band Trevor Bolder on bass who shared most of the Uriah Heep history with him. Like all bands, Uriah Heep went through highs and downs but their audience never stopped loving them, probably because Uriah Heep music never let them down and remained at high levels even in the darkest moments. In their 40-year musical career Uriah Heep accomplished to release 21 studio albums. Altogether their records sold more than 30 million units worldwide. Today’s line-up is Mick Box (Guitar/Vocals), Bernie Shaw (Lead Vocal), Trevor Bolder (Bass), Phil Lanzon (Keyboards/Vocals) and Russell Gilbrook (Percussion/Vocals). With the exception of the new extraordinary drummer Gilbrook, this line up is by far the most enduring of all.
To celebrate their 40th band anniversary Uriah Heep decided to look back to their past without melancholy or nostalgia. Uriah Heep look at the future proud and happy about their 40 years of joyful relationship with their audience. That’s how the album title “Celebration”came about. Heep history has been an extraordinary journey and it was time that their greatest classics were recorded in studio by the line up playing them live to fans all over the world for more than 20 years. The band re-recorded twelve of their most successful songs: classics like “Free Me”, “Gypsy”, “The Wizard”, “Easy Living” and of course their all-time smash-hit “Lady In Black”. In addition to that they have composed and recorded two completely new songs as a special gift to their fans “Only Human” and “Corridors of Madness”, two of their best tracks in years.
