This year, expect an "upgraded" Christian Bautista.

"I want to do something else. I want to do something exciting. In terms of music, I'm looking for a new sound," he said in an interview after his contract signing with St. Augustine School of Nursing late last month.

The "new sound" wouldn't be anything drastically different from what he's doing now. Christian explained, "It's definitely still a ballad para 'di naman magulat yung tao. A new ballad. A ballad for this generation which again will spread like wildfire sa Asia or something like that. If I should do a Mandarin song or if I should do a Bahasa song, anything. I'm open."

Last month, the singer, who's been dubbed as the "Asiansation," asked his fans on Twitter to send him songs he can do for his next album. So far, he's received songs in Malaysian, Indonesian, English, and Filipino.

"I'm not just banking on the mainstream composers kasi meron d'yang magagaling e," Christian said.

This doesn't mean he's not willing to work with established composers. "I'm willing to collaborate with anyone," he said, as long as he finds the sound he's looking for.

"Malalaman mo 'yun pag narinig mo 'yun," he said.

But why is Christian looking for something new in terms of his music after several years of being known as a romantic balladeer?

"Why? Because seven years I've been singing slow ballads. As an artist I want to do something else. Meron ka talagang core fans who will like this kind of music. And yet, 'yung music it evolves e. So to get new fans, hindi pwedeng yun ka lang. Kailangan mag-experiment ka ng konti," he explained.

Christian said he wants to do more acting this year as well. This was after doing the Indonesian movie "Jayden's Choir" and the Regine Velasquez-starred "Miss Recto." Although his role in "Miss Recto" is only minor, his experience in making the independent film inspired him to "do something more serious, something more nakakagulat."

"Jayden's Choir" will premiere this March in Jakarta, Indonesia.
