Koreaboo | Hallyu Wave hitting Taiwan with Full Force
Popularity of Korean culture, especially k-pop, has been increasing at a rapid rate in Taiwan. The loyalty and passion that Taiwanese fans display are evident through the consistently sold-out concerts and fan parties, and this in turn has made the place a destination that many k-pop groups and artists visit for their promotions.
Leading the way for the longest visit is Super Junior-M, who recently just ended their two-month long stay in Taipei, with members Donghae and Siwon staying behind for the filming of a Taiwanese drama. Super Junior as a whole has made a presence in Taiwan, where they held 3 concerts as part of their Super Show 3 tour, while Super Junior-K.R.Y. also successfully held 2 concerts back in November 2010.
Additionally, JYJ’s concert in Taipei set a record for having the shortest time between the concert announcement date and the actual concert date, and still managed to sell out the concert within hours of the sale. Rain also held a concert in Taipei earlier this month, which was his last concert in Taiwan before he joins the military. Other groups have also enjoyed success in Taiwan. Artists that have promoted in Taiwan include FT Island, SHINee, CN Blue, Jang Geun Seok, F.Cuz, U-Kiss, ZE:A, SNSD, Wonder Girls, and more.
Upcoming activities scheduled in Taiwan include 2AM’s mini concert on June 3rd, Super Junior-M’s fan parties on June 6th, SHINee’s 1st concert in Taiwan to be held on July 16th, Jang Geun Seok’s fan meetings on June 24th and 25th (a second show was added on the 24th due to popular demand), and BEAST’s fan meeting on July 23th. Tickets to events for SHINee, Jang Geun Seok, and BEAST are all set to go on sale on June 4th, setting a record of having three different Korean artist groups beginning their ticket sales on the same day.
Meanwhile, SNSD is expected to have a concert date in Taiwan as part of their upcoming tour, and officials at Super Dome, the organizer of many k-pop events in Taiwan, have announced appearances of Super Junior in events being held at the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012, prompting speculations of SM Town Taiwan and Super Show 4 taking place during those timeframes.
Given the proven success of K-pop groups in Taiwan as well as other places overseas, will Korean entertainment companies continue to expand into other markets outside of Korea? Would this expansion be limited to Asia only?

Mla Bulletin | 2NE1 records first English single; Fans rally around Super Junior’s Kyuhyun
by Jonathan M. Hicap
April 10, 2011, 2:44am
K-pop girl band 2NE1 has officially released the music video of the English version of their hit song “Can’t Nobody.”
YG Entertainment, 2NE1’s Korean agency, uploaded the video on the official 2NE1 channel on YouTube yesterday. It has garnered 122,860 views overnight, and earned praise from fans who watched it on the video-sharing site.
One commented that “the English version is better than the original (Korean version),” while the rest were greetings and fans suggestions of songs for possible English release.
This is the first time that 2NE1 has released a full-English song and it might have been a test to see how fans will receive 2NE1 if the group releases more English songs in the future. It may also be related to 2NE1’s plans to expand and enter the US market.
The original Korean version of “Can’t Nobody” is a cut from 2NE1’s first full length album, “To Anyone,” which was released in September last year.
2NE1 members Sandara Park, CL, Bom and Minzy recently attended a motor show and fan meeting set up by motorbike company Yamaha in Thailand. The group is busy preparing for their comeback album; and on June 4, 2NE1 will hold their Manila concert at the Araneta Coliseum.

Meanwhile, fans of boy band Super Junior got worried when it was reported that Kyuhyun, one of the main vocalists of the group, got in a car accident yesterday morning on his way to perform in the the musical “The Three Musketeers.”
According to Korean media, Kyuhyun was driving at around 5AM along Honam Expressway in Jeongeup in North Jeolla province in South Korea when the accident occurred.
Two versions of the accident were reported by the media. One was that Kyuhyun was changing lanes when he hit a truck. Another was that the truck hit Kyuhyun’s car instead.
Kyuhyun suffered bruises on his arms and legs and was taken to a hospital for treatment. As such, he was unable to perform as d’Artagnan, his character in the “Three Musketeers” musical held on April 8 at the Gwangju Culture and Art Center in South Jeolla province. He was replaced by actor Uhm Ki Joon.
After the accident, Kyuhyun tweeted “I’m sorry. I’m sorry” to his fans who were all worried and who flooded his Twitter account with get-well-soon messages.
The accident brought back memories to fans who remembered Kyuhyun’s serious car accident in 2007 together with other Super Junior members, which also happened in April.
Kyuhyun had been in a van together with Super Junior members Eunhyuk, Shindong and leader Leeteuk and managers when their car flipped. Kyuhyun suffered the most injuries including broken ribs and fractured hip. He fully recovered after several months.

Yahoo SEA | Super Junior thrills Manila with 'Super Show 3'
Written by Karen Valeza
After a successful concert in Manila in April last year, K-Pop idol group Super Junior made a big comeback to the country for the continuation of their third Asia tour, Super Show 3, held at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, February 26.
Super Junior’s latest concert has eclipsed the success of their previous Manila concert, garnering more support and bigger attendance, as evident in sold-out premium seats, fully-packed Big Dome and more fan-support projects. Super Junior, dubbed as the largest group in Korea and one of the largest in the world for having 13 members, kicked off their 3rd Asia Tour at the Olympics Gymnastics Arena in Seoul last August and has then toured nine cities, including Manila.
Super Junior’s immense popularity in the Philippines made it the first and only K-pop group to have six number one albums in the Philippines, namely “Sorry Sorry,” “Super Girl,” “Super Show 2 Live Album,” “Don’t Don,” and “Bonamana Versions A, B and C.”
Ten members from Super Junior, namely Leeteuk, Heechul, Yesung, Shindong, Sungmin, Siwon, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun, exceeded everyone’s expectations and entertained their fans with their chart-topping hits such as “Bonamana,” “No Other,” “Sorry Sorry” and “Don’t Don”; showing the group’s excellent vocal prowess, powerful dance choreography and great interactive performances. Fans were up for a special treat when Super Junior M’s Henry and rock band Trax, also from Super Junior’s agency SM Entertainment, made special appearances much to the delight of Filipino and overseas Super Junior fans.
“Super Show 3” producer Pulp Live World Productions, the same company that brought Super Junior to Manila last year, complemented the idol group’s performances with the V-DOSC sound system, which was used for the first time in the Philippines, and a bigger, sprawling stage design that allows group members to get closer and be more interactive to their fans. True indeed, the boys were often seen shaking hands and playing around with their fans, receiving gifts and taking photos with them. Big platforms, laser lights, fireworks, rising and rotating platforms, large monitors and air suspenders make up the extravagant stage. Super Junior sung a total of over thirty songs which included their group performances, special solo stages and tributes.
Any Super Junior fan knows that aside from their singing abilities, Super Junior is also popular for their hosting and showmanship skills, as they hosted the concert themselves and did comical parodies. Girls went crazy when Super Junior’s resident joker and MC, Heechul, performed Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face,” dressed in a tight-fitting mini-black dress and blonde wig. Donghae, Shindong and Eunhyuk had the fans laughing with their performance of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.” Another highlight of the concert was their unique performance of “No Other” with Leeteuk and Sungmin being suspended on air, throwing confetti to their fans and the rest of the members were on a round, rotating platform. Of course, Super Junior performed their smash hit “Sorry, Sorry,” the song which made them popular in the Philippines.
What made the Super Show 3 concert stand out is the effort and unity of fans in supporting Super Junior by conducting various projects to surprise the group during the show. Before the concert, various fan clubs like SJUPH and SUJU MAD exerted extra effort by preparing Filipino and Korean food for Super Junior and crew and customized banners for the concert. Super Junior was well-received by their fans as evident in various fan projects, deafening cheers and fan chants. “Super Junior has been to a lot of different countries, different cities, but Philippines has been the loudest,” Super Junior M’s Henry said.
Super Junior fans, also called as ELFs or everlasting friends, lighted the Big Dome with sapphire blue, the group’s official color, waving their glow sticks as they cheered on their idols. Super Junior was overwhelmed and touched by the fans’ response with their loud cheers and warm welcome as they kept on saying how much they appreciate and love their Filipino fans.
The three-hour long concert just passed like a breeze as fans demanded for an encore when Super Junior already said their goodbye. But, Super Junior definitely left their fans happy when group leader, Leeteuk, left a message saying that they’ll give better performances and songs on their fifth album. After “Super Show 3,” Filipino fans this early are now requesting the concert organizers Vernon Go and Happee Sy for another Super Junior concert next year. Now, that is super.

Super Junior-M’s Henry reveals the Korean pick-up lines his groupmates taught him
On February 22nd, Super Junior-M’s Henry guested on SBS’s “Strong Heart“, and confessed that his fellow groupmates gave him a unique lesson on Korean that brought about some interesting results.
He began, “My mother is Taiwanese, and my father is from Hong Kong. It’s been about three years since I came to Korea. At first, it was difficult for me to pronounce things in English with a Korean style, like ‘Hae-ri-po-ta (Harry Potter),’ ‘He-reu-mi-o-ni’ (Hermione),’ ‘Ham-buh-geo (hamburger).‘”
Henry continued, “I didn’t want to look like a disrespectful person because of my lacking Korean skills, so I asked the Super Junior members to teach me Korean.”
The expressions that he were taught consisted of pick-up lines, including, “What’s your horoscope (byeol jari)?”, to which he was instructed to respond, “Next to you (yeop jari).” Henry was also taught the question, “Where are you?”, which should be followed up with, “In your heart, in the second exit~”. Finally, when asking “What kind of alcohol do you like?”, he should know the answer, “Your lips~”.
Upon hearing the phrases, Shindong and Eunhyuk gave embarrassed looks and exclaimed, “I didn’t think he’d say this on broadcast!”
Be sure to check out his cute performance here:

Koreaboo | Bloomberg discusses the Korean Pop industry
Bloomberg Television is a 24-hour global network dedicated to providing viewers with business and financial news. It is distributed globally, reaching over 200 million homes worldwide.
The international success of the Korean pop music industry is growing by the day. Bloomberg's weekend program, "Monocle", has chosen this week to feature Seoul, South Korea and its blooming music industry. "Monocle" is a program that highlights particular areas of the globe and discusses a central matter or issue.
Likening the power of Korean pop to music produced in the US, the report raised three main areas of discussion: the Korean pop industry as Korea's real economic power and most potent export, the significance of social media in the success of Korean pop, and the fact that Korean pop is more than just music, and essentially a package of both visual and audio appeal.
Big Bang's GD and TOP were also featured briefly as a top, "two of the most recognizable faces in Asia" and appeared in short interview clips, both sharing their views on the industry. TOP commented, "However you look at it, people seem to be feeling a sense of discovery and mystery about Korea. It seems that they're seeing us in a positive light." In his turn, GD said, "Right now, to know that a lot of fans around the world are listening to music from our tiny country, it's got to have a huge effect on the Korean music scene. But, as the situation changes very rapidly, the scene's got to develop just as fast."
Another familiar face, YG's Executive Director, Kim Jinu, was also featured, explaining the reality of the social media reform. He said, "YouTube right now is the best vehicle for us to reach our core demographic audience which is young people. The world, not just Korea - there are no boundaries or borders anymore. We no longer have to rely on TV stations and radio stations. Social networking has been the vehicle of choice."
Other artists mentioned or showcased throughout the segment included BoA, Girls' Generation, Epik High, Super Junior, 2NE1, and Wonder Girls along their hit single, "Nobody". Various excerpts from music videos were shown, as a reinforcement to the proposition that Korean pop is quintessentially very visually synchronized with musical appeal. It was likened to "the Madonna and Michael Jackson days of super hero performances".

Kpoplive | Details on Super Junior M’s new leader & member line up spilled
As we are nearing to Super Junior M's comeback, more information about their upcoming course of promotions have been revealed. In addition to that, the tittle-tattle on who the new leader of the sub-group as well as it’s new member line up was also addressed.
Since their official comeback date was announced, fans have been pretty curious on who the new leader of the sub-unit will be. Up until recently, various sources from forums and fan community sites have mentioned about member Siwon taking the baton after Hangeng left the group and went back to China to pursue a solo career. However, AVEX Taiwan refuted the allegation and said that rumors of the aforementioned member being the new leader is not true.
With regards to the recent change in the sub-group’s member line up, the camp stated that Sungmin and Eunhyuk both participated in this album only as guests, and that this doesn’t imply that they will be permanent members of the sub-group. Furthermore, they also added that apart from the two, there is a possibility that the other Super Junior members will participate in Super Junior M’s future albums. Nonetheless, Siwon, Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, Donghae, Zhou Mi and Henry are permanent members of the sub-unit.
Moreover, AVEX Taiwan also mentioned the following:
1. That’s right, the first broadcast of the MV in Taiwan is for the Golden Melody Awards. Hope this time they will get an award.
2. At the broadcast press conference on 24 February it will mainly be for the media and will not be open to fans.
3. This time SJ-M will be using the form of 6+2, in the future it will also be maintaining 6 people and above, 6+ how many is not certain, but the members who will be added will all be people we like.
4. SJ-M might hold a Fan Party but it will not be held that quickly.
5. SJ-M’s promotions hope to be held in Taiwan but still to be confirmed, it should be flying back and forth.
6. Ryeowook’s Chinese version of “One Fine Spring Day”, also other Chinese songs sung by Kyuhyun, at present there is no plan for these to be released.

Super Junior "Super Show 3 Manila"

Super Junior is currently tagged as the largest boy group in Korea and as one of the largest in the world. The group consists of LeeTeuk, HeeChul, YeSung, KangIn, ShinDong, SungMin, EunHyuk, DongHae, SiWon, RyeoWook, KiBum, HanKyung and Kyuhyun, but three, namely KiBum, HanKyung and KangIn, are inactive due to various reasons. They debuted in 2005 under SM Entertainment and have garnered interest locally and as well as internationally since.
Super Junior is not only known for their massive member count but as well as their talents and wits. With their debut album, they have reached 3rd in the Korean charts and that is amazing feat for a rookie group. Their success and popularity skyrocketed with their succeeding albums, all of which have been released in various Asian countries and have reached number one in various international charts as well. Aside from that, Super Junior is also the first and only K-Pop artist with six albums that reached number one in the Philippines – “Sorry Sorry” in September 2009, “Super Girl” in November 2009, “Super Show 2 Live Album” in February 2010, “Don’t Don” in May 2010, “Bonamana” Version A&B in July 2010 and “Bonamana” Version C in August 2010.
Super Junior’s 4th album “Bonamana” is the best-selling Korean album in 2010 with over 250,000 copies sold in Korea alone setting a new record and pushing the standards of Korean music way up. The album has also been greatly successful in other countries as well, such as Japan, reaching number 5 in the Oricon chart; Taiwan, topping the charts for 34 straight weeks; China and Thailand, ranking number 1; and the Philippines, hitting the 1 million peso mark less than a few hours after its official album launch. The accomplishments above only signal a promising future for the group.
Also, as not to waste the individual talents of the members, they have branched out to participate in the different aspects of the entertainment industry, which include acting, hosting and disc jockeying. The group has also been divided into sub-groups to further unleash and make known the individual recognition of each member in their respective areas of specialty.
In line with their success, they decided to hold their first ever concert tour called Super Show in the year 2008-2009. During their first show in Korea, the tickets issued were sold out in 10 minutes triggering them hold to an encore concert. The encore concert received an even greater result as because the tickets flew to the hands of the fans in a span of 5 minutes when the ticket selling started. The same scenario happened in their 2nd Asia Tour but this time their tour stops had expanded to a total of 15 shows in 7 different countries including the Philippines.
The Super Show 2 held last year was a definite success in all the countries due to the shocking and unexpected response from the international fans. As evident in the scenarios at the airports in different countries wherein hundreds of fans caught security off-guard and caused chaos just to catch a glimpse of their idols. The said concert tour also exceeded everyone’s prospects with its sprawling stage design, spectacular sound system and interactive performances with special guests.
Super Junior kicked off their 3rd Asia Tour at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul. A lot of famous personalities in the entertainment industry were reported to have watched the concert to show their support for the group. In this year’s Super Show 3, Super Junior is expected to be performing 35 songs in approximately three hours. Performances will include selected hit songs from their albums, special stage solos, breathtaking mid-air stunts and hilarious parodies of various artists.
This is one of the most awaited K-Pop concerts of the year around Asia and it is definitely something to anticipate for.
